- Opportunity Belief
- I believe movie theaters should provide services such as food or drinks to customers while they remain in their seat via ordering through a tablet/monitor.
- Unmet Need
- While watching a movie if anyone needs something to eat or drink then they must get up and miss part of the movie.
- Any moviegoer has this need including older adults, teens and kids.
- I think this need has always existed but it is becoming more apparent with the advances in technology. Some movie theaters currently employ a system similar to this proposal and some also serve hot food and alcoholic beverages as opposed to the standard popcorn and ICEES.
- Currently to meet this need people are leaving their seats during the movie and missing elements of the film or they decide to not get anything to eat or drink and remain watching the movie.

- Reflections
- I learned that I was correct in my assertion that people would rather remain in their seat as opposed to getting up to get what they needed. I learned about the call button in a different theater.
- I learned that movie theaters are losing out on money by not providing this service. Also I learned that the monitor may not be a good idea. I was surprised that it would not be a disturbance.
- I learned that people will go next door for food rather than the theater. Once again people will suffer through the hunger or thirst rather than missing part of the movie. I also learned that everyone is in agreement for the convenience but some think it is a distraction for the monitor lights.
- Summary
- I believe my original opportunity still exists. It has been implemented in some places already and it will create additional revenue for the theaters. The monitor may become a problem but it could be dimly lit to eliminate distractions.
- I believe my new opportunity has not changed much from my original opportunity. I still think monitors could be implemented as long as they are not bright.
- I think entrepreneurs should adapt if there is overwhelming evidence to adapt. I don't believe in staying firm no matter what and entrepreneurs should have some flexibility. I think remaining focused to the core principals is essential or else anytime the wind blows in a different direction, entrepreneurs would be willing to change. In my particular case I would be more of the mindset of staying firm in my original concept.

Forming An Opportunity Belief

Brian,
ReplyDeleteI definitely think there is an opportunity to add food and drink services to the movie theaters itself, especially with the advancement of technology. Also, by movie theaters having this type of service should increase the attendance to it. I agree, with your interviewees that it could potentially be a distraction during a movie, however, if implemented correctly it would do great. Great idea!
Brian, I found this idea to be very different and innovative. However, not only would the monitors be distracting, but also the delivery of the food. It would be hard to get the food to someone in the middle of the row without disturbing the other viewers. In my town there is a movie theater with the concession stand right in the actual theater that the movie is playing, so this may be an alternative.
ReplyDeleteHayden,
DeleteThanks for the feedback. In another theater, food is currently being served and so far there has not been a distraction even in the middle rows oddly enough. I think the primary concern would be the monitors which I admit is a tough idea to implement.
I would have to agree with Hayden. I think there is potential for the idea. I know I've found myself wanting more popcorn during a movie, but didn't want to miss anything so I remained seated. However, I think the delivery service would be distracting and draw attention away from the movie. If someone was paying attention to the delivery, he or she still may miss something going on in the movie.
ReplyDeleteHayden,
ReplyDeleteFortunately, this is a problem that has been solved elsewhere. Locally, Gainesville lags behind a lot in entertainment (other than the Fall, of course) and I am not surprised that theaters remain behind the curve. Studio Movie Grille (or similar concepts) exist in Atlanta and in most major markets. At SMG, there is a small buzzer located on what amounts to the table in front of your chair. By pushing the button, it hails a server to your location via their iPads, which they also use to place orders and run the final tab. It is an experience that costs several dollars more than the traditional movie going experience, but it is money well spent and money that even college students can afford to 'splurge' on. If someone was able to break through Regal's local monopoly, one would stand to have an extremely profitable business.
Brian,
ReplyDeleteI definitely think that there is an opportunity here, but like anything that is still in the idea phase, it’s not going to be perfect. You have a great idea but I have to agree with the others in that there is still room for improvement. I think that the monitors would definitely cause a distraction and could hinder the movie experience for some. Maybe they could use dark backgrounds and lighter fonts to help reduce the disturbance. Or maybe even have privacy screens on each monitor so the only person who can see the screen would be the person sitting directly in front of it. I went to a small movie theater once where they had the concessions stand directly in the theater at the back of the room. This would also solve the problem, but it might be difficult to staff at large locations with 20+ different theaters and could drive the cost of going to the movies up. Great idea, just keep playing around with it!
Briana,
DeleteI like your name first and foremost as it has mine as the root :). Thanks for your feedback and suggestion of the privacy screens as that's something I initially did not think of until your comment. I like that idea but of course that could drive up costs. As you said it's still the idea phase so maybe I'll continue forward or go with a completely new idea.
Everyone,
ReplyDeleteThanks for your honest feedback. I really appreciate it and I look forward to further interactions with you all throughout the remainder of the semester and beyond.
