Testing the Hypothesis, Part 2

    1. Who
      • Some people do not like the idea of covering their fans as they have spent money on them and would like them to be seen.
      • Some people are old-fashioned and would not see the benefit in purchasing this product.
      • Some people would only buy if they are fashionable and do not necessarily mind cleaning their blades periodically but would like them if they are more appealing.
    2. What
      • The need to maintain cleanliness differs from the need to become fashionable.
    3. Why
      • People outside the boundary just need clean blades which are fashionable whereas people inside the boundary want clean blades and a safer easier way of cleaning them.
    4. Recordings
    * My battery died for recording 5. He stated he would pay $20-$30 for the blades if they were fashionable.

    Inside the Boundary
    Outside the Boundary
Who: People with ceiling fans looking for cleanliness, safety, and ease of use.
Who: People who don’t have ceiling fans or don’t mind cleaning them by hand; They are looking to make a fashion statement.
What: The need to remove dust from fan blades and an easy way to clean them.
What: The need to maintain cleanliness only without any extra products or to create a home fashion statement.
Why: People inside the boundary want a safe way to clean their blades and to maintain cleanliness for appearance purposes and health.
Alternative: Different fan blade design or making blades stand out in a fashionable way.

  1. Hey brian! I think your idea is great. You did a really good job of evaluating who is inside and outside the boundaries and how that is going to effect the purchasing of the product. Your product appeals to just about everyone so you already have a lot of people that would be interested in your product. Not only do people want an easy way to clean the top of their fans, but making your product stand out in a more fashionable way makes it that much more interesting.

  2. Brian,

You have definitely done your research for your idea, and I especially like for health factors associated with it. I believe a lot of people forget to clean their ceiling fans, which then accumulate large amounts of dust, therefore people could be allergic to dust and have health problems associated to it in extreme cases. My one question is would you want to extend the line of different designs if they are successful and create more demand for the product?

  3. Patrick,

Thanks for the support. To answer your question I would definitely extend the line if I was able to create more demand. I am in favor of introducing the product, creating demand, then letting the customers dictate how I proceed from that point forward.

  4. I think its a good idea. The only thing I can think of is that ceiling fans probably have different sizes, so it might be hard to find a sleeve that is "one size fits all." I think there were a lot of good things being thrown around. Having certain brands (like batman for kids) was a really good idea. You could also include college designs, so that people could have the fan sleeves with gator heads on them. I think this product definitely could succeed if it looked good enough.

  5. Hi Brian,
I think you have a great idea and I think that specializing the fan to meet the user's fashion preferences is a great way to be able to attract more customers. I also love that this idea has a huge market because both people inside and outside the market because there will always be people whose main desire is to look fashionable over cleanliness and people whose desire is cleanliness and health concern over fashion. Great job!

  6. Hey Brian,

I can tell that you are putting a lot of effort into this product idea. I think that this is definitely something that could really be successful if you keep at it. This is something that has a very large potential market and is widely appealing because a lot of people tend to be lazy and/or just forget to clean their fans. Great job with your second round of interviews, and keep up the good work!

  7. Hey Brian,
I'll be honest, at first I was unsure about your idea...for fashion's sake. My friends have definitely heard me complain about cleaning my fan blades in my bedroom, since after I dust the blades I have to wash my bed sheets to make sure all the dust/dirt that fell on my bed is gone. It's so annoying. So I thought about your idea some more, and I think even for the fashion-oriented this could work. If you sell plain white/off-white covers that look exactly like the original blade color, then no one would really notice the difference in the blades at all - which would be exactly what someone like me would want. I can definitely see the appeal in fun colors/graphics, but believe you could hit a bigger market if you also sold plain, original fan blade colors. That's my two cents, great idea!

    1. Sarah,

I appreciate your two cents and you actually gave me an idea in your comment. I will try to test out transparent covers if there is transparent fabric. That would solve the problem if someone wants their original fan blades to show. I really appreciate your feedback.

  8. Hey Brian, I'm a little confused as to what you mean by inside the boundary and outside the boundary. The descriptions are unclear to me about what each type of customer is. Clarifying that would be good. Also, I was thinking about your product and Swiffer came to mind. Proctor and Gamble represents some of the largest brands in home cleaning products. I would look into what products they offer for fan cleaning. Swiffer has the handheld dust collector that "traps" all dust when sweeping. Comparing your idea to what is out there would help you with any possibilities of problems you might have with your product!

    1. Amanda,

Thanks for the suggestion and input. I will definitely look into comparisons as well as substitutes. To answer your question at this point I would say inside the boundary are the people who only want clean fan blades and do not want to have to clean them constantly for various reasons including the task being difficult or just forgetting to clean them. Outside the boundary are the people who don't mind cleaning their fan blades and would only buy if the covers looked fashionable as well as the people who do not have ceiling fans at all. I hope this provides some clarity. If not you know where to find me and thanks for your commentary.
